From choosing the right charger to OZEV grant applications — a step-by-step guide for Liverpool homeowners looking to install an electric vehicle charging point.

Why Install an EV Charger at Home?

With the UK ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and rapid growth in electric vehicle ownership, having a home EV charger is no longer a luxury — it is fast becoming a necessity. Home charging is significantly cheaper than public charging, more convenient, and better for your car's battery.

A dedicated 7kW home charger can fully charge most EVs overnight, giving you a full battery every morning. Public rapid chargers cost up to 80p per kWh, while home charging on a standard electricity tariff averages 30p per kWh. On an EV-specific tariff with off-peak rates, this can drop to as little as 7.5p per kWh.

For Liverpool homeowners, installing an EV charger also adds property value. Estate agents report that EV-ready homes are increasingly sought after, particularly in areas with on-street parking challenges like Liverpool city centre, Aigburth and Wavertree.

Choosing the Right EV Charger

The most common home EV charger in the UK is a 7kW untethered unit, which adds approximately 30 miles of range per hour of charging. This is sufficient for almost all domestic needs. A 22kW charger is faster but requires a three-phase supply, which most UK homes do not have.

Key features to look for include smart app control, scheduled charging for off-peak tariffs, solar integration, dynamic load balancing (which prevents your home supply from being overloaded), and PEN fault protection for properties with PME earthing — which is most homes in Liverpool.

Conaty&Co. is an OZEV approved installer, which means we can install chargers that qualify for government grants and meet all the technical requirements set by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. We install chargers from leading brands including Pod Point, Ohme, Hypervolt and Zappi.

The Installation Process Explained

Every EV charger installation begins with a site survey. Our OZEV approved electrician assesses your existing consumer unit, the available capacity of your supply, the best cable route from your meter to the charger location, and the earthing arrangement of your property.

If your consumer unit is old or lacks spare ways, a consumer unit upgrade may be required before the charger can be installed. We include this in our quote if needed. Most installations also require a dedicated 32A circuit protected by an RCBO, and a new earth electrode for properties with PME supplies.

On installation day, the work typically takes 3-6 hours. We mount the charger, run the cable, install the circuit protection, carry out full testing, and commission the unit. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate, Building Control notification, and a demonstration of how to use your charger and app.

How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost in Liverpool?

A standard 7kW EV charger installation in Liverpool typically costs between £900 and £1,500 including the charger unit, cable, circuit protection, labour, testing and certification. The exact price depends on cable length, consumer unit condition, and the charger model you choose.

Additional costs may apply if you need a consumer unit upgrade (£400-£700), a new earth electrode (£150-£300), or significant cable routing through walls or under driveways. We always provide a fixed, itemised quote after the site survey, so there are no surprises.

While the government's OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant for homeowners ended in March 2022, landlords and flat owner-occupiers may still be eligible for grant support. Contact us for the latest information on available grants and schemes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an EV charger work with my existing fuse board?

It depends on the age and capacity of your consumer unit. Modern units with spare ways can usually accommodate a new charger circuit. Older fuse boards or those that are already full may need upgrading first. We assess this during the free site survey.

Can I charge my EV from a normal socket?

Technically yes, using a granny cable at 3kW, but this is very slow (adding only about 10 miles per hour) and can overload a standard socket circuit. A dedicated 7kW charger is safer, faster, and a legal requirement for permanent EV charging.

Do I need planning permission for a charger?

Generally no. Wall-mounted chargers on the front or side of a house fall under permitted development rights. However, listed buildings and properties in conservation areas may require approval. We can advise on this during your survey.
